It’s Time To Start Focusing More On Food That’s Good For Skin – And Not Just Skin Care Products

I eat healthy. Well, I try to eat healthy.  I’m easily swayed by chocolate, french fries, and pretty much anything made with fat.  I try to avoid all of those bad things because I’m either on a quest to maintain my weight or lose 10 or 20lbs. Sigh.

Do you feel the need eat well and/or lose some weight too? If so, what’s the motivation for you? For me, fitting into my clothes is a big motivation (getting a new wardrobe is REALLY expensive!). Interestingly, there’s something else that’s motivating me to eat better lately too though – healthier, more vibrant skin!

Let me tell you my story about that…

A year ago I went on a cleanse organized by my friend who is a practicing Naturopathic Doctor. She has a real passion for addressing health issues through diet first so I was pretty excited to give it a try.

When I decided to go on her cleanse, I was probably at my worst health. There were health issues in my family, I was spending a lot of time at the hospital, my husband was crazy busy and we were selling and buying a home in a new city!

The result of all that stress and chaos was basically feeling horrible AND looking horrible. My skin was getting all dry-patchy, I actually looked grey, and the products I made to improve these things in the past helped, but not nearly as much as they had when I was healthier. Plus I gained about 10 lbs.

It was a good time for the change. The biggest challenge with the detox was getting back into cooking real food – but boy oh boy was it ever life-changing! It did wonders for my energy levels, mood, body and my skin too. I had the energy of a sprite little 20’something and my face reflected that (well, at least that’s what I believe(d). Lol.

Here’s wheat I learned – eating well – no fried foods, no processed foods, lots of water, etc etc etc is definitely a good first step to feeling great. And it absolutely helps with your skin. But my biggest takeaway from all that is this – an “anti-inflammatory cleanse” is absolutely essential for the health of your skin AND body. And it’s something we should all do as part of a body and skin detox!

So, what does an anti-inflammatory cleanse do?

An anti-inflammatory cleanse cuts certain foods out of your diet that tend to create inflammation internally. This can include anything from eggplant to red meat and alcohol.

The reason this is important is because skin is the second largest organ in the body and also one of the organs of detoxification. If there is inflammation in the body, it can show up on your skin in such forms as acne and eczema.

Sooooo, if you’re experiencing skin conditions that don’t seem to resolve using any kind of topical treatment, what you’re eating could be the problem. Cutting the offending foods out of your diet can not only make your skin look much better, but your overall health will improve as well.

Why does an anti-inflammatory cleanse help?

An anti-inflammatory cleanse gives your digestive system a break. When your digestive system is constantly exposed to processed foods or foods that don’t agree with it, it’s not able to do its job very well.

When you eat a healthy diet and your digestive system is working optimally, it is able to digest the food you eat thoroughly so that the nutrients your body needs become available to rebuild tissue and provide you with the energy you need to function.

When your digestive system is stressed and damaged by toxins and foods that are damaging to it, nutrients are not broken down properly, so they can’t be absorbed properly and used by the body. The body isn’t able to repair itself properly and all kinds of health problems can ensue, from mild to serious.

When you are on an anti-inflammatory cleanse, you’re cutting out a lot of the foods that create stress for the digestive system (e.g., alcohol, sugar). These things aren’t necessarily bad, but we eat/drink too much of them and it’s good to give your body a break.

In addition to the effect of inflammatory foods on your digestive system, you could also have an allergy or sensitivity to the foods on the list below. Once you figure out which foods have this effect and cut them out, you will see improvements in various areas of your body. Your skin will improve, aches and pains will improve, stomach issues will improve, your skin will improve, and so on.

How do I do an anti-inflammatory cleanse? And what food’s should you avoid?

An anti-inflammatory cleanse is a 2-3 week commitment. What you do is cut out anti-inflammatory foods for your diet and eat a lot more fruits and vegetables than you probably do now (like 6+ servings per day!).

Once you are coming to the end of your 2-3 week cleanse, you introduce the “no” foods into your diet one at a time for a few days each (with a few days in between). This will help you find out which ones are causing issues for you. Then, you keep these foods out of your diet forever, or at least eat less of them less often.

Some of the common foods to cut out of your diet during a detox include:

  • red meat
  • eggs
  • alcohol
  • sugar
  • peanut butter
  • caffeine
  • anything made with white flour (regular pasta, bread)
  • white rice
  • potatoes
  • tomatoes
